How to Clean Your Engine Compartment (Safely and Effectively)

Whether you're prepping your vehicle for a car show, listing it for sale, or simply taking pride in your ride, a clean engine bay can make all the difference.

Note: This guide is written with all vehicle owners in mind, no matter what you drive.

Why Clean The Engine Bay?

  • Makes it easier to spot small leaks and issues early

  • Helps components stay cooler and function more efficiently

  • Reduces wear on belts, pulleys, and wiring

  • Improves resale value and shows pride of ownership

  • And let’s face it, it just looks better

Step-by-Step Engine Compartment Cleaning Guide

1. Make Sure the Engine Is Cool

Never clean a warm engine. Let your vehicle sit overnight before cleaning. Spraying cold water on warm components can cause condensation inside electronics, leading to damage.

2. Protect the Air Intake

  • Remove the air intake duct

  • Tape off the throttle body opening with duct tape

  • Remove or cover the air filter housing if needed

3. Choose a Good Cleaner

We recommend Greased Lightning, which lifts dirt without aggressive scrubbing. There are other safe underhood cleaners as well, just avoid citric acid-based products on coated parts (they can cause discoloration).

4. Apply Cleaner and Let It Soak

  • Work in the shade when possible, or clean in sections

  • Remove plastic engine covers to reach hidden areas

  • Spray cleaner on the engine, inner fenders, and radiator area

  • Let the cleaner soak for 10 minutes, keeping it wet the entire time

5. Rinse Gently, Not Forcefully

Use a standard garden hose. Avoid:

  • Pressure washers (which can force water into sensitive areas)

  • Steam cleaners (which can cause damaging condensation)

6. Dry It Out Thoroughly

  • Use compressed air to blow off water

  • Focus on areas under covers and around the alternator

  • No air compressor? A leaf blower works too!

7. Final Touches That Go a Long Way

  • Wipe down plug wires with silicone spray applied to a cloth- this repels moisture and restores shine

  • Apply high-temperature grease to the hood latch

  • Spray hood hinges with a lubricant like Superlube or LPS #1

💡 Bonus Tip:

If your vehicle allows it, remove the radiator cover for better access to the radiator and A/C condenser. You might be surprised how much debris collects up top and how much it affects cooling.

A clean engine compartment shows you care and it’s simple maintenance anyone can do.
